The installation “What hath God wrought?” by the artist group LAb[au] is on display at “The Seduction of The Bureaucrat” show in Mechelen, Belgium.
The title of the installation is a line from the Book of Numbers, being the first communication transmitted by telegraph in 1844. Using the same technology, the artwork is powered by the 100 most used words in Thomas More’s “Utopia,” feeding the correspondence between a series of telegraphs.
In the work, rolls of written paper fall to the floor, and slowly the errors enter the closed system and change the meaning of the words. The installation makes a reflection on progress based on a self-regulating system in which failure rules and error becomes its driving force, revealing its own beauty.
