Gonçalo Ivo was born on August 15, 1958, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, son of poet Lêdo Ivo and teacher Maria Leda Sarmento de Medeiros Ivo. He graduated in architecture in 1983 from Universidade Federal Fluminense.
