For the first time, the Brazilian public will be able to see a counterpoint of the two masters of the kinetic school.

To close in style the opportunity to show, for the first time in Brazil, a set of works by two artists of the greatest importance in the international contemporary scene of the 20th century, Dan Galeria is promoting a large exhibition at its headquarters.

The curatorial approach focused on the works of Alexander Calder and Jesus Soto, two artists whose restlessness that culminated in their kinetic works is based on the work of the same master, Piet Mondrian.

It was after a visit to Mondrian’s studio that Calder had his first idea of creating a work in motion. Thus, he began his first kinetic compositions, instigated by the movement of the planets in the sky, which could sometimes simultaneously shelter the rising sun and an evanescent moon.

Soto, in turn, upon arriving from Venezuela for a one-year residency in Paris in 1951, was enchanted by the synthesis of form expressed in Mondrian’s work, but added the overlapping of plans that set off the entire process of a work that would have the kinetic effect in addition to the optical effect.

Due to the repercussion and the interest shown by the public in the works of the two artists during SP Arte, Dan Galeria thought that it should offer the public the opportunity to counterpoint the two masters outside the scope of the fair. The objective of the exhibition, of very short duration, is to allow a comparative view of the artists’ work and that this aesthetic identity can be perceived beyond the interference that the fair brought.

Showcasing 8 works by Soto and 7 by Calder, this is the first exclusive exhibition in the country of the two artists, who, coincidentally, have been in Brazil three times, in individual exhibitions or at Bienals, and who proved to be passionate fans of our people and our culture.
